About Our TMJ & Jaw Pain Treatment Service
Temporomandibular joint disorders affect the jaw joint, the muscles that control jaw movement, and the surrounding structures. The TMJ is one of the most complex joints in the body, responsible for the intricate movements involved in chewing, speaking, and swallowing. When it malfunctions, effects can be wide-ranging and debilitating โ chronic jaw pain, difficulty opening or closing the mouth, clicking or popping sounds, headaches, earaches, and neck and shoulder pain.
TMJ disorders have multiple possible causes including bruxism, arthritis within the joint, displacement of the cartilage disc, direct trauma to the jaw, stress-related muscle tension, and bite misalignment.
Our evaluation is comprehensive. We review your medical and dental history, palpate the jaw muscles and joint, listen for clicks during movement, assess range of motion, examine your bite relationship, and take appropriate X-rays.
Treatment begins with conservative approaches: a custom occlusal appliance to reduce muscle tension, physical therapy exercises to strengthen jaw muscles, anti-inflammatory medication, and behavioral modifications such as stress management and dietary changes. The vast majority of patients respond well to non-surgical treatment.
